During the second weekend of September the streets of Vilnius were hijacked by spontaneous dance floors. Music ranging from 20s Lithuanian classics to old-school electro hip-hop and Bollywood disco, with recorded dance instructions and fictional information about the city mixed in, was broadcasted through a special radio programme. Anyone could join the events by tuning in their car radio, dancing in the street with us, or simply listening to the programme. Drifting dance floors, with music played on car radios and a classic 80s boom box, would over the night attract from 5 to more than 50 participants.

With almost no prior advertising or organised structure the dance events were driven by a logic of spontaneity and chance, creating an asymmetrical network of surprises, without climax or endpoint. The open-ended and non-structured character of the events generated the possibility for encounters between different individuals and social groups that would meet in the dance events and through radio frequencies.

The invasion of fantasy into the physical space of the city continued with the opening of the radio studio at the Contemporary Art Centre exhibition hall. The first radio program was recorded live during the opening of the show, and transmitted in almost real time through the radio channel “Start FM” (94,2FM). Recording equipment and a computer programme installed in the exhibition hall allowed visitors make their own recordings and have them broadcast the next day. Thus visitors were invited not only to listen, but also to add to and actively shape the content of the radio program. These contributions included poetry recitals, mobile phone melodies, short anecdotes, a priest giving a lecture on patriotism, children laughing, interviews between friends.

Portable radio receivers were made available for visitors to borrow as guides or companions in the city. By using almost outdated media for communication and music broadcasts such as portable radio receivers and boom-boxes the project proposes that one can copy-paste, revive and remix fragments of history and create an alternative timeline in the present. The 80’s boom box, whose use at the time helped to define the identity of marginalized black groups, became in the context of 21st century Vilnius a tool for inclusion and the blurring of social lines. By remixing past artefacts into the present one can provoke new roles, new meanings and new performers.

An experimental catalogue was presented which, instead of commenting on the exhibition in a straightforward manner, contained a collection of images and textual inserts suggesting how to read or otherwise use or misuse the book.

The three parts of the project (dance events, open-source radio, and catalogue) rely on the notions of spontaneity, accidental social encounters, and the free-floating imagination of the spectator. This project searches for alternative spaces for collective social experience that are not strictly organised but rather loosely guided, and are an end in itself rather than governed by a means-end logic. City streets can become the space for celebration for its own sake; radio can be a space for the creative expression of the spectator; the catalogue, instead of being a passive medium, can turn into a note book, how-to guide, or companion, and extended in variety of directions by the reader’s fantasy.

These days everyone and their mother is Dj-ing, so you don’t want to just send a basic loop. You’ve got to give people a sense of total context and environment, which means you’ve got to be a lot more creative and really open up some new space with your material.

Sampling plays with different perceptions of time. Sampling allows people to replay their own memories of the sounds and situations of their lives. Who controls the environment you grew up? Who controls the situations with which you engage? At the end of the day, it’s all about representing the world around you, and this will happen no matter how hard entertainment conglomerates and an old generation of artists tries to control these processes. We’re in a delirium of saturation. We’re never going to remember anything exactly the way it happened. Memories become ever more fragmented and subjective.

A deep sense of fragmentation occurs in the mind of a DJ. When I came to DJ-ing, my surroundings—the dense spectrum of media grounded in advanced capitalism—seemed to have already constructed so many of my aspirations and desires for me; I felt like my nerves extended all of these images, sounds, other people—that all of them were extensions of myself, just as I was an extension of them. Trains, planes, automobiles, people, transnational corporations, monitor screens—large and small, human and non-human—all of these represent a seamless convergence of time and space in a world of compartmentalized moments and discrete invisible transactions. Nuojautos tyrimas, atliktas Bukarešto universitete, Rumunijoje: Mokslininkų pora nustatė, kad „telepatijos bangos“ (42.20 metrus siekiančios radijo bangos) atlieka svarbų vaidmenį tiriant nuojautos reiškinį. Tyrimas buvo atliktas naudojant specialiai sukonstruotą radijo bangų stiprintuvą. Mokslininkų pora, įvardijusi save kaip „L“ ir „B“, siekė nustatyti, kaip šis stiprintuvas įtakoja jų vienas kitam siunčiamus minčių signalus. Tyrimu buvo įrodyta, kad kuomet radijo aparatas buvo įjungtas, minčių signalų perdavimas buvo sėkmingesnis.

Projekto sumanymas kilo is noro atgaivinti Vilniuje keleta 80-uju istorijos fragmentu. Tai lengva istorijos dekonstrukcija, nesilaikanti linijines laiko sampratos, atgaivinanti ir permiksuojanti istorijos fragmentus i radijo eteri ir spontaniskas sokiu aiksteles mieste. Šis projektas-kvietimas tarsi atkerpa „laiko juostos“ mėginį ir pabando rasti jam vietą ir naują vaidmenį, atlikėjus ir prasmę dabartyje.

Rugsėjo 6 – 8 d. vakarais Vilniuje pasklidus spontaniškoms šokio aikštelėms, rugsėjo 14 d. ŠMC erdvėse atsiras kiti kvietimai prisijungti. SMC parodu erdve taps atvira radijo stotimi, kurios lankytojai gales ne vien pasiklausyti radijo laidu, bet ir perkurti ar pildyti ju turini. ŠMC įrengta radijo studija, kaip ir kitos projekto dalys, yra nuoroda į galimybę, postūmis dalyvavimo link, kvietimas dalintis, perkelti, tęsti, judėti ir pildyti. Pirmoji radijo programa bus gyvai irasinejama atidarymo metu, bei transliuojama “Start FM” 94,2 bangomis. Radijo transliacija, kaip ir sokis gatveje, yra tarsi asimetrinis siurprizu tinklas, kuriame nera kulminacijos ar pabaigos, testinumo ar praeities, tad sis tinklas mezgasi ir egzistuoja vien esamuoju laiku. O „Judesių katalogas“ taps kažkieno užrašų knygele, vienodai pradėta projekto autorių ir pasklidusia po miestą, žyminčia įvairius tvarkaraščius, slepiančia skirtingus skirtukus ir virstančia netikėtais daiktais.

cat’s pyjamas (zelig)

The phrase cat’s pyjamas (or cats in pyjamas?) comes from the movie “Zelig” by Woody Allen (1983), where a chameleon-man Leonard Zelig “is literally capable of being any and every man, a human vessel who embodies our sociological urge to conform. He comes to the attention of the public through the media when he is sighted at affluent social gatherings, appearing to some as one man and moments later, as another. In fact, his ability to become everything to everybody makes him a blockbuster celebrity. Zelig’s metamorphosis is material; he physically takes on the ethnic characteristics or manifests the weight proportions of those around him, complete with spontaneous facial hair and costume. The gimmick-crazed public makes him an instant celebrity, and his popularity soars through merchandising tie-ins. A cavalcade of dances, songs and games are created around his phenomenon.” (www.woodyallenmovies.com)

the phrase comes from the 20s and is reportedly adequate to the now more often used:

A bee’s “corbiculae”, or pollen-baskets, are located on its tibiae (midsegments of its legs). The phrase “the bee’s knees”, meaning “the height of excellence”, became popular in the U.S. in the 1920s, along with “the cat’s whiskers” (possibly from the use of these in radio crystal sets), “the cat’s pajamas” (pyjamas were still new enough to be daring), and similar phrases which made less sense and didn’t endure: “the eel’s ankle”, “the elephant’s instep”, “the snake’s hip”. Stories in circulation about the phrase’s origin include: “b’s and e’s”, short for “be-alls and
